The American Legion Riders are well known for their charitable work which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local schools, veteran’s homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships. In Garden City, Michigan, in 1993, two legionnaires came together to start a motorcycle enthusiast association within the organization. Two long-time riders wanted an environment where Legion family members could come together to share a common love of motorcycles. Their proposal was sent the Department of Michigan where it was approved, and a new program known as the American Legion Riders began. Currently, over 110,000 riders meet in over 2000 chapters across the country and overseas. In 2021, the National Executive Committee of the American Legion fully approved this program. Each ALR group must be a program supported by a post.
